臺北市立國樂團成立於1979年，是臺灣第一個專業國樂團。歷任團長為陳暾初、陳澄雄、王正平、鍾耀光、鄭立彬、陳鄭港，現任團長為鄭立彬。在歷任團長及音樂總監王正平、邵恩，首席指揮瞿春泉及張宇安的帶領下，厚植團員專業演奏素養，讓臺北市立國樂團躋身國際知名樂團，以開創性的跨界節目來拓展「國樂」的定義，樹立臺北市立國樂團獨特的樂團風格與藝術走向。

樂團的標語「讓您聽見世界」，明白揭示臺北市立國樂團不單只有演奏傳統國樂，更與國際名家合作，多方嘗試跨界演出，發展出臺灣國樂的新模式，為國樂永續發展創造嶄新視野。2017年推出的「TCO劇院」製作，更是展現了強烈的企圖心。近年大量委託臺灣作曲家為樂團量身創作新曲，也讓樂團成為全球委約及演出臺灣作曲家作品最多的樂團，以「臺灣品牌立足國際」。

臺北市立國樂團每年平均服務近10萬名愛樂者，辦理超過百場各種型態的音樂會，包括「臺北市傳統藝術季」、「育藝深遠」、「文化就在巷子裡」社區音樂會、國內巡迴演出等。還有由7個附設樂團500餘人組成的大家庭，每年定期培訓、展演，為國樂蓬勃發展打下良好的基礎。在國際文化交流方面，曾多次出訪過歐、美、亞超過20多個國家，足跡遍及世界各個重要音樂廳，巡演所到之處受到海外愛樂人士歡迎喜愛，成績斐然。2018年11月赴美國紐約市卡內基音樂廳演出，成為首個登上卡內基音樂廳演出的臺灣樂團。

臺北市立國樂團創團至今共錄製超過百張有聲出版品，屢獲傳藝金曲獎肯定，亦獲優良政府出版品殊榮，傑出表現受到國際樂壇重視。其中，應瑞典BIS唱片公司邀請，合作錄製及發行國際專輯；另與繆斯藝術文化有限公司合作，以臺灣風土人文為主題，發行年度專輯，將臺灣音樂創演能量推向國際舞臺，持續發光發熱。

過去46年來，篳路藍縷，一步一腳印穩健成長。近年來在演奏上更以建構「國樂新聲響美學」的「臺北之聲」，琢磨出樂團獨有的細膩音色，以展演優秀傳統國樂作品、展現臺灣國樂生命力為目標，努力開闢國樂新時代。

Taipei Chinese Orchestra (TCO) was established in 1979 as Taiwan's first professional Chinese orchestra. It was formerly led by general directors Tun-Chu Chen, David Chen, Cheng-Ping Wang, Yiu-Kwong Chung, Li-Pin Cheng, and Cheng-Kang Chen; the incumbent General Director is Li-Pin Cheng. Thanks to the extraordinary leadership of the former and serving general directors, music directors Cheng-Ping Wang and En Shao, and Principal Conductors Chunquan Qu and Yu-An Chang, the performing prowess of TCO has been continually strengthened, making it an internationally renowned orchestra. With creative crossover programs that expand the definition of Chinese music, TCO has successfully established its signature style and artistic direction. TCO's slogan "Let You Hear the World", indicates that TCO not only performs Chinese music, but also collaborates with musicians worldwide. Meanwhile, TCO has endeavored to multi-disciplinary performance, in search of brand new auditory experience for local audience, as well as developing a new model for Chinese music in Taiwan. Among these attempts, productions from TCO Theater Series since 2017 are especially ambitious. In recent years, TCO has commissioned a large number of Taiwanese composers to write original pieces for Chinese orchestra, thus become the orchestra that commissions and premieres the most works by Taiwanese composers in the world, successfully establishing its own international brand.

TCO performs for more than 100,000 music lovers annually and holds concerts in various forms. Among those are Taipei Traditional Arts Festival holding from March to June every year; "As Music As Life", an educational project of over 20 concerts per year for sixth graders in Taipei City; "Culture in the Back Alley" series consisting of 36 community concerts of promotional project; tours at schools and halls around Taiwan, and so on. It also has a huge community comprising of more than 500 members of its seven affiliated orchestras that rehearse and perform regularly, laying down a solid foundation for the thriving development of Chinese music.

In terms of international exchange, the TCO has performed at major concert halls around in the world, making its presence known in more than 20 countries in Europe, North America and Asia, and has been warmly welcomed by music lovers wherever it performed. Furthermore, TCO has become the first professional orchestra from Taiwan performing at Carnegie Hall in New York upon its debut there in November, 2018. The impressive performances during the tours have earned TCO music lovers around globe.

Since its founding, TCO has recorded over 100 audio publications, repeatedly winning recognition from the Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music, as well as honors for excellent government publications. Its outstanding performances have garnered attention from the international music community. Among its achievements, TCO was invited by Sweden's BIS Records to collaborate on recording and releasing international album recordings. Additionally, in cooperation with Muse Music, TCO releases annual albums themed around Taiwan's local culture and humanities, projecting Taiwan's musical creative energy onto the international stage and continuing to shine brightly.

Over the past 46 years, coming a long way from humble beginnings, TCO has grown steadily, one step at a time, to become a world class orchestra, devoting itself to paving the way to the new era of Chinese music.
