Wei-Yung Tseng

"Tseng Wei-Yung possesses a musical sensibility of exceptional maturity and nuance." — Central News Agency

Tseng Wei-Yung is a Taiwanese conductor of rare balance—intellectual precision fused with emotional depth. He currently serves as Associate Music Director and Resident Conductor of the OneSong Orchestra, and is also Artistic Director of Chance Culture and founder of PHONOLITE. He is known for an extraordinary sensitivity to orchestral sound and an ability to shape it from within, creating a musical language on stage that is compact, transparent, and luminous with human feeling.

Music has been the defining force of Tseng's life since childhood. He holds degrees from Tainan National University of the Arts (erhu and orchestral conducting, under Professors Peng Li-Tun and Ku Pao-Wen) and a Master's in Conducting from National Taiwan Normal University (under Professor Hsu Ching-Hsin). Over the years he has drawn inspiration from distinguished conductors including Yan Huichang, Xia Feiyun, Chen Cheng-Hsiung, Li Ying, Donald Portnoy, and David Amado—gradually forging a conducting aesthetic of his own, marked by structural command and expressive conviction across both Western symphonic and Chinese orchestral repertoire.

His podium career began early. He entered professional conducting training at seventeen, quickly distinguishing himself through instinctive musicianship and remarkable focus. In 2016 he won First Prize in the Taiwan National Chinese Orchestra Young Conductors Programme; the following year, he took Second Prize and multiple special awards at the Hong Kong International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music, including prizes for Best Interpretation of a Work on Taiwan and Musicians’ Choice. Yan Huichang, Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, praised him as "a conductor of exceptional command and artistic depth."

Tseng has served as Guest Associate Conductor of the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan (2017–2020), Music Director of the Taiwan Philharmonic Chinese Orchestra (2020–2022), and was selected for the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra's International Music Talent Programme (2021/2022). He continues to collaborate with ensembles at home and abroad, bringing to each partnership a style that is precise, supple, and quietly philosophical — giving every work a sense of living breath.

For Tseng Wei-Yung, conducting is an act of honest listening and dialogue. In the spaces between the notes, he allows music to speak the language that lives deepest in the human heart.
