The musical career of Franck Bernède, cellist and ethnomusicologist, has traversed a number of currents.  He was born in 1958 into a family of musicians in Dijon, France.  His education began under the instruction of his father, the violinist and conductor Jean-Claude Bernède.  He later studied with Alain Meunier and Reine Flachot at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon as well as with Arto Noras at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, where was awarded his Higher Diploma.  His studies were completed in the Baroque music classes of Christophe Coin and William Christie at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris where he obtained a first prize in baroque cello in 1987.

Since then, Franck Bernède has performed in most European countries as well as the United States, Japan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Taiwan.  For close to fifteen years, he has participated in numerous concerts and recordings for ensembles specializing in the Baroque repertoire such as the Concert des Nations (directed by Jordi Savall), the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges (Christophe Coin), Les Arts Florissants (William Christie), Al Ayre Español (Eduardo Lopez-Banzo), Il Seminario Musicale (Gérard Lesne), etc.

Parallel to his activities as a concert artist, Franck Bernède places a high value on teaching.  Based in Asia for about fifteen years, he has devoted five years to creating a Center of Baroque music studies at Chinese Culture University in Taipei, Taiwan, coordinating in this country several projects, giving recitals, conferences and masterclasses.  Among others, his various projects included the artistic direction of Purcell's Fairy Queen with the Taiwanese orchestra "Philharmonia Moments Musicaux."

His calling to build bridges between East and West is also apparent in the field of ethnomusicology, where his research during the last Forty or so years in India and Nepal has concentrated on the traditions of the central Himalayan bards along with Newar music of the Kathmandu Valley.  He holds a doctorate in social anthropology and ethnomusicology from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris).  Franck Bernède is the founder and director of the Singhini Research Center, a Nepalese organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the music and dance of the Himalayas.
