The Munich-born pianist Julian Riem studied with Michael Schäfer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, with Michel Béroff at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris, and in Rudolf Buchbinder's soloist class at the Basel Academy of Music. Early on, Béroff hailed him as one of the "most promising pianists of his generation." He won international competitions in Modena, Madrid, and the Premio Vittorio Gui in Florence, and received a scholarship from the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb.

Together with cellist Raphaela Gromes, he forms a well-established duo. Their four CD recordings for Sony Classical have won numerous awards and all entered the German classical music charts. These CDs include world premieres and several of Riem's own arrangements. Their album "Offenbach" received the Opus Klassik for chamber music in 2020, and their Strauss recording was awarded a Diapason d'or.

He is also a member of the Velit Piano Quartet and the Munich Horn Trio, which won an Echo Klassik in 2012 for its recording of trios by Brahms, Ligeti and Koechlin (Farao Classics).
