Concert with four International Cello-stars & Taipei Chinese Orchestra TCO

This concert marks a remarkable collaboration between the Taiwan International Cello Festival TWICF 2026 and the Taipei Chinese Orchestra (TCO). On this spectacular and varied concert, four of the most distinguished cellists of our time from France, China, Japan and Poland meet the vibrant sonic world of the traditional Chinese orchestra.

In recent years, the repertoire for Chinese orchestra has expanded significantly, with many new and exciting compositions and transcriptions. These works, often celebrated for their fusion of Asian melodies with Western symphonic structures, are increasingly being embraced by audiences worldwide.

Among them are brilliant concertante works for cello, which will be performed in this exiting program by some of today's most remarkable cellists:

A World of Imagination, a colorful cello concerto by Taiwanese composer Wang Yi-Yu will be performed by world-renowned Chinese cellist and 2022 Queen Elisabeth Competition 2nd prize winner Yibai Chen.

Mongolian Fantasy by Yiu-Kwong Chung will be interpreted by the highly talented young Japanese cellist and winner of several international competitions (a.o. 2024 Enescu International Competition 1st prize) Yo Kitamura. In both works, dazzling virtuosity meets lyrical beauty, as Asian musical elements seamlessly blend with Western symphonic traditions.

Western works have also found their way into the Chinese orchestra repertoire. One such highlight is the ever-popular Gypsy Airs, op.20 by Pablo de Sarasate, originally composed for violin. This captivating and virtuosic piece will be performed by one of today's most exceptional young cellists—2024 ARD Competition 2nd prize winner Krzysztof Michalski from Poland.

The artistic partnership between TWICF's founder, cellist Pi-Chin Chien and TCO first flourished in 2019 with the creation of a new version of Taiwan Rhapsody for cello and Chinese orchestra. Originally composed by Swiss composer Fabian Müller for Western orchestra, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London for Sony Classical, the work consists of three rhapsodies inspired by Taiwanese folk melodies and indigenous chants. It reflects the composer's deep admiration for Taiwan's rich musical heritage—a country that has long become his second home. The rhapsodies No.1 & 3, arranged for Chinese orchestra by Simon Kong, will be performed by the outstanding French cellist and winner of Queen Elisabeth Competition 2017, Victor Julien-Laferrière.

The evening opens with a world premiere: After years of composing for Western orchestras and opera houses, Fabian Müller has received his first commission to write a work for Chinese orchestra. Audiences can look forward to this exciting debut!
